Doctor Who’s tenth series was transmitted from 1972-73. Reaching its first acknowledged anniversary season was obviously a cause for celebration. But, 40-odd years on, is the series’ content worth celebrating too? Put simply: yes.
The Three Doctors has its faults, but the banter between its multiple leading men is worth the price of admission alone. Carnival of Monsters is one of Robert Holmes’ best scripts, both funny and insightful. Frontier in Space should be required viewing in this age of fake news, while Planet of the Daleks is a surprisingly thoughtful action story. (And who can resist Daleks? Lots and lots of lovely Daleks!) Finally, The Green Death is of course ‘the one with the maggots’ and wonderful in so many ways.
