David Bradley

Doctor Who Magazine’s TARDIS tin contains 120 tantalising, taxing and trivial questions. Each interviewee must answer a random selection…
“Lucky dip!” David Bradley with DWM’s TARDIS tin.

Technically speaking, Jodie Whittaker is not the first Doctor to come from Yorkshire. “That’s right,” says the BAFTA-winning actor David Bradley. “Technically it was me.” David, who portrayed the First Doctor in 2017’s Twice Upon a Time and William Hartnell in the 50th anniversary drama An Adventure in Space and Time (2013), was born in York. However, his natural Yorkshire accent is not often heard in his work. “I don’t get a chance to use it very much,” he says. “I love doing accents.

I’m good at some, hopeless at others. I’ve done stuffin Geordie, and a lot of my parts have been cockney, like Filch in Harry Potter… [cockney accent:] ’e talks li’e tha’ all the time. I love Brummie… [Brummie accent:] although I’ve never bin asked to do it, ya know, it’s not tha most attractive accent.
