The Fourth Doctor and K9 wish DWM a happy 40th birthday. Art by Ryan Hall.

DWM celebrates its 40th birthday this month. We’ve been inundated with letters telling us how you discovered the mag…

MICHAEL STEAD EMAIL I still have a vivid memory of my newsagent, Mr Needham, telling me in the autumn of 1979 that a new magazine was coming out. He knew I liked Doctor Who and he also happened to be the father-in-law of Graham Williams, who was then the producer of the TV series. So when the first copy of Doctor Who Weekly arrived, I also got a Target book – Horror of Fang Rock – signed by Tom Baker. I’ve bought every issue ever since (and some, like the recent DWM Target Books special, twice). Can I send you the bill to have my floors reinforced?!

It’s about time I wrote a letter to DWM – it’s been part of my DNA for pretty much my entire lifetime. The first copy I bought was issue 87 in 1984, the one with the Master chuckling to himself on the cover. I coloured in the comic strips – now I look back at this as sacrilege! I remember Dogbolter, Frobisher, the Archives, Matrix Data Bank… the list goes on. Features might come and go, but there is one constant over the decades – the excitement when the mag slips through my letterbox. Happy 40th DWM. Top work and may you continue forever.
