Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 26

Our verdict on the latest episodes and products.
Artwork from the booklet accompanying the Season 26 box set. Artist Lee Binding was inspired by The Curse of Fenric (1989).

BBC Studios RRP £56.16

Featuring Sylvester McCoy (The Doctor) and Sophie Aldred (Ace)

Contains Battlefield, Ghost Light, The Curse of Fenric, Survival

In 1989, Doctor Who was heading towards cancellation. But the show had saved some of the very best for last.

Season 26 was a showcase of strong ideas – so much so that it’s sometimes hard to believe the series hadn’t gone there before. Did it really take more than a quarter of a century before Doctor Who considered a story featuring Arthurian mythology, or one about World War II vampires, or a Victorian haunted house? It’s both an ace season and the Ace season, with three of the stories focusing heavily on the Doctor’s companion, so it’s appropriate that one of the main features in the Blu-ray set is an in-depth interview with Ace actor Sophie Aldred, carried out with customary erudition by Matthew Sweet.
