Fugitive of the Judoon will be remembered as the episode that revealed a Doctor we knew nothing about. “I’m still in shock,” says Jo Martin.

Oh my gosh! What an honour!” Jo Martin has just found out she’s receiving the accolade of a Doctor Who Magazine cover.

“You’re going to make me cry,” she says. “I’m very emotional. I’ve been crying since I got the job. I can’t even find words some days. I’m still pinching myself. I grew up loving Doctor Who. My first Doctor was Tom Baker and then, you know how it is, when Tom Baker was going to leave I thought, ‘No one can ever replace him!’ But Peter Davison did and I loved him too…

“I won’t bore you with all my memories, but let’s just say I’ve been a fan since I was a little girl in the 70s. As an actor, I always dreamt about getting a guest appearance. I didn’t care what it was. I’d pretend to be a Dalek - although I’m a bit tall for a Dalek, I think. I just wanted to get a piece of Doctor Who. Many of my friends have been in Doctor Who over the years. I was always like, ‘Oh, I didn’t get a call for that audition. I didn’t hear about that part.’ So when I got the call for the audition I was like, ‘Yeaaaaah!’”

Tour guide Ruth Clayton (Jo Martin) in Fugitive of the Judoon (2020).
