On a recent trip to Roath Lock in Cardiff I was lucky enough to watch the recording of a sequence from the new series of Doctor Who. After a while the large studio doors opened to admit a group of visitors that included a number of over-awed children and teenagers. As soon as the assistant director announced a break, Jodie Whittaker emerged from the TARDIS set to say hello. She was immediately surrounded by these young fans, and as she spoke to them I couldn’t help but eavesdrop.
One subject dominated their questions. What was her costume made of? Was it all specially created? Had she helped to design any of it herself? After several minutes of describing her favourite aspects of the outfit, Jodie removed her coat and asked if anyone wanted to wear it for a photo. She spent the next few minutes posing for pictures with the starstruck fans, most of whom clearly couldn’t believe their luck. There can’t be many other programmes where an item from wardrobe can inspire such a reaction.
The word ‘iconic’ is much over-used at the moment, but it’s an appropriate description for so many of the show’s costumes over the years. It’s impossible to think of the Second Doctor without his tattered morning coat, the Third Doctor without an elegant velvet jacket or the Fourth Doctor without a lengthy scarf – still the most famous item of clothing associated with the series, nearly 40 years after it was last seen. More recently, the Tenth Doctor’s striped suits and the Eleventh’s bow tie have upheld this tradition. In the case of the latter, Matt Smith’s Doctor transformed something that once seemed impossibly eccentric into a genuinely fashionable accessory. We are, however, still waiting for his fez to catch on in the same way…
