Jonny Dixon played Shefield crane operator Karl Wright in The Woman Who Fell to Earth.

There’s maybe no one more excited about the arrival of a Yorkshire Doctor than Jonny Dixon. “It’s absolutely fantastic! I’m from Yorkshire myself,” he says proudly.

Jonny has phoned us from his home in Leeds. “Sheffield’s just so close to home and I’ve got family there so it’s brilliant to see my neck of the woods on Doctor Who. You know what else is fantastic?

As well as acting I teach drama all over Yorkshire and I’m the head of drama at a drama school in Jodie’s home town. It’s such a coincidence! I found that out when we were talking on set. I think they dropped a TARDIS of at the train station near to where she grew up after she was revealed as the Doctor.”

The announcement of Jodie’s casting in July 2017 is an occasion Jonny remembers well. “When I heard that she was taking over and it was just all over the publicity, I thought: ‘What a brilliant step forward for the series.’ I’ve loved all of Jodie’s previous work that I’ve seen. Her episode of Black Mirror especially caught my eye and I just thought, ‘What a fantastic actress.’ Going to the interview for Doctor Who and getting the job, then finding out I’d be going on an adventure alongside Jodie in her opening episode… well, it kind of hit me like a brick wall. I couldn’t believe it.”
