Julie Hesmondhalgh talks about delivering Kerblam!’s Head of People, Judy Maddox, to our screens…
Julie Hesmondhalgh came to prominence as Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street.

In January 2016, writer Chris Chibnall was preparing the third season of his hit detective series Broadchurch, which would follow the investigation into a brutal assault on Trish Winterman, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh.

“I had a first phone call with Chris telling me about my part on Broadchurch and reassuring me about the politics of the show,” remembers Julie. “But he’d just been announced as the new showrunner on Doctor Who, and he just sort of threw in at the end that there might be a part for me in that sometime in the future.” She laughs. “It was literally the best phone call of my life!

“I’ve always been a fan of Doctor Who,” she explains. “I watched it every Saturday night when I was a kid – from behind the settee, obviously. The end of Jon Pertwee and then Tom Baker was definitely my era. But when it came back in 2005 with Chris Eccleston’s Doctor, that modern incarnation so rooted in now and the whole thing with Rose, I just absolutely loved it. I watched David, Matt and Peter, all of it. So I’m a second-generation Whovian; it’s this second wave since it came back that’s really captured me.”
