With her script for The Witchfinders, Joy Wilkinson conjured one of the most disturbing and thought-provking episodes in Series 11

Joy Wilkinson

A Morax manifests itself through the body of Becka Savage (Siobhan Finneran) in The Witchinders (2018).

“I was partly thinking of Alice nutter, who was hanged for being one of the Pendle witches but was actually a gentlewoman.”

“You can’t adopt a full-on horror approach,” says writer Joy Wilkinson.

Joy Wilkinson is new to the Doctor Who writing team, but the series has been part of her life since she was a child. “I’ve watched all of it from the end of Tom Baker onwards, but I don’t have a ‘This is what happened in that episode’ sort of brain,” she says. “My earliest memories of Doctor Who are more emotional ones.”

The first episode Joy can remember watching featured a sequence where “these things hatched out into spiders and Romana gets kind of tainted by them, ending up with wavy lines on her face. She becomes evil, or infected in some way. That one gave me nightmares as a kid. Which story was that?”
