In July 1969, while writing The Ambassadors of Death, David Whitaker was caught up in a real-life plot almost as extraordinary as the Doctor’s voyage to Mars…
David Whitaker had helped to establish Doctor Who in 1963. The Ambassadors of Death (1970) was his final script for the programme.

The Ambassadors of Death (1970) is the last television Doctor Who story credited to David Whitaker, who’d been the programme’s first story editor from 1963-64 and then provided scripts for the series every year until 1969.

Whitaker first discussed the story with producer Peter Bryant and script editor Derrick Sherwin in 1968, but an outline wasn’t formally commissioned until 1 May the following year. Bryant and Sherwin were happy enough with it to commission scripts for seven episodes on 25 June. It seems Whitaker wrote Episode 1 over the next week, although the production team didn’t receive the script until 8 July. Whitaker had been in Moscow from the 2nd.

Producer Peter Bryant commissioned The Ambassadors of Death in 1969.

About Doctor Who Magazine

“Space: the final frontier. Final, because it wants to kill us...” The TARDIS doesn’t just travel through time – stories set in space have been an essential part of Doctor Who for six decades. The inhospitable void between the stars has served as the backdrop to epic space operas and nerve-racking thrillers, while harbouring some of the most dangerous adversaries the Doctor has ever encountered. This lavish publication navigates a revealing course through the space lanes of Doctor Who, with exclusive interviews, rare images, and guides to some of the most memorable episodes.
