The work of Doctor Who’s concept artists reveals much of the detailed planning that goes into the series’ spacebound episodes.

In preparing for the return of Doctor Who in 2005, the production team realised that the series required not just a production designer who’d be in overall charge of the look of each episode, but also concept artists. The latter would concentrate on the two-dimensional design of particular elements such as sets, complex props and computer-generated items as a guide for their ultimate realisation.

While these artworks, many of them beautifully rendered, are invaluable aspects of the production process, they’re rarely seen beyond the production office. Here, however, is an opportunity to admire the virtuosity of Doctor Who’s concept artists as they give full rein to their imaginative ideas of space travel.

About Doctor Who Magazine

“Space: the final frontier. Final, because it wants to kill us...” The TARDIS doesn’t just travel through time – stories set in space have been an essential part of Doctor Who for six decades. The inhospitable void between the stars has served as the backdrop to epic space operas and nerve-racking thrillers, while harbouring some of the most dangerous adversaries the Doctor has ever encountered. This lavish publication navigates a revealing course through the space lanes of Doctor Who, with exclusive interviews, rare images, and guides to some of the most memorable episodes.
