The Leisure Hive

ON RELATIVE EARTH DATE 2250, THE VIOLENT ambition of Theron welded the humanoid people of the planet Argolis into a single nation and took them into a war with the reptilian Foamasi. Within 20 minutes, 2,000 interplanetary missiles had wiped out most of the Argolin, leaving the survivors sterile. Argolis’ surface was uninhabitable for over three centuries – a beautiful but deadly spectacle of red, radioactive storms of radon 222 heavy metal dust.

Arising from the war was the Argolin’s new science of tachyonics. This was initially a cloning programme to save their species, but it resulted in disfigured mutants and was soon abandoned. The technology instead formed a recreational centre known as the Leisure Hive, offering an Experiential Grid; here, visitors could understand what it was like to be a foreigner in cells of different environments designed to produce physical, psychic and intellectual regeneration. In promoting cross-cultural understanding between life forms of different cultures and genetic types, the Argolin aimed to prevent further wars.
