Future Feline

Of the many characters the Doctor has met in the far future, among the most memorable is the cat nun Hame, played by Anna Hope.
Anna Hope as the cat nun Novice Hame in New Earth (2006).

Following the Doctor and Rose Tyler’s visit to Platform One in 2005’s The End of the World, Doctor Who’s executive producer and lead writer Russell T Davies wasn’t done with the far future. For the launch of David Tennant’s first series as the Doctor in 2006, the Time Lord and Rose travelled to New Earth in the year 5,000,000,023, coming face to whisker with a new race of aliens…

“The cultural reach of Doctor Who is huge, isn’t it?” says Anna Hope, who played Novice Hame of the Sisters of Plenitude, feline nuns who ran the New New York hospital. “It’s just a joy really,” she says of a role she first played 12 years ago and is still part of her life today.

A humanoid space-cat nun presumably isn’t the kind of character that drops onto an agent’s desk every day…“Definitely not!” says Anna, laughing. “For the initial job, they said, ‘It’s going to be fantastic, they’re going to be very human, but a bit like cats. I thought, ‘Great! My big break!’ Then I went for my first fitting, and it was this full cat face. ‘Oh, right…’ I thought. I’d never done anything like it before.
