Since 2004, the Doctor’s home world has been defended by his former companions Romana, Leela and K9 in a spin-off audio series from Big Finish.
Lady President Romanadvoratrelundar (Lalla Ward) and K9 featured on Lee Binding’s cover artwork for the 2006 story Appropriation.

It is the dawn of a new era for the Time Lords. Reforms instigated by Lady President Romanadvoratrelundar are sweeping away antiquated traditions and relaxing Gallifrey’s monopoly of time travel.

A coalition of temporal powers – including the Monan Host, the Nekkistani and the Warpsmiths of Phaidon – invites other civilisations to forestall extending their borders across the fourth dimension, ensuring their security in return. The Time Lord Academy is about to welcome its first alien children, creating a Galactic University that will share Gallifrey’s knowledge and experience in what Romana describes as “a liberation of the autocracy.”

Binding’s cover for Weapon of Choice (2004), the first release in the series, featured Romana and Leela (Louise Jameson).

But dark forces conspire against Romana and her new inclusive Gallifrey. The reforms are unpopular with traditionalists in the older houses, and isolationists within the Celestial Intervention Agency (CIA) object to the loss of absolute temporal authority. Harboured on the bubble world of Gryben, a terrorist organisation calling itself Free Time opposes the restrictions imposed by the coalition, believing that time travel should be freely available to all for exploration and exploitation. And within the Matrix, a malevolent ancient intelligence rises to reclaim the ultimate power of the Imperiatrix...

This is the setting for Gallifrey, a long-running audio drama series produced by Big Finish which reunites four of the Doctor’s former companions in an epic tale of time travel, power politics, conspiracies, civil war, alien invasion and alternative timelines. Launched in March 2004, Gallifrey stars Lalla Ward and Louise Jameson, reprising their television roles as Time Lady Romana and the Sevateem warrior Leela respectively, together with John Leeson as both the Mark I and Mark II versions of K9, the Doctor’s robot dog.

About Doctor Who Magazine

The Doctor’s own people, and his home planet, were introduced in 1969 as a major chapter in the series’ history came to an end. Five decades later, the Time Lords and their devastating war with the Daleks are still essential parts of Doctor Who’s mythology. This special publication analyses every story set on Gallifrey, reveals previously unseen images from the making of the episodes and interviews key players in the Time Lords’ fascinating story.
