Beyond the Grave

One aspect of The Five Doctors seems to divide opinion more than any other. Rassilon is revealed at the end of the story – but is the legendary Time Lord alive or dead?

We need to talk about Rassilon. Engineer. Leader. Lord President. Architect of Time Lord society. Perhaps the greatest Time Lord who ever lived. Yes, lived. Past tense – implying at some point that Rassilon died, his body ending up in the Dark Tower at the heart of the Death Zone on Gallifrey, otherwise known as the Tomb of Rassilon. Which is a pretty big hint about the condition of the occupant.

Or is it? It seems the status of Rassilon in The Five Doctors (1983) is open to interpretation. We asked some of the great and good of Doctor Who what they thought about the rumours of Rassilon’s death. We got some surprising responses...

A sentient image of Rassilon (Richard Mathews) surveys the visitors to his tomb in The Five Doctors (1983).

About Doctor Who Magazine

The Doctor’s own people, and his home planet, were introduced in 1969 as a major chapter in the series’ history came to an end. Five decades later, the Time Lords and their devastating war with the Daleks are still essential parts of Doctor Who’s mythology. This special publication analyses every story set on Gallifrey, reveals previously unseen images from the making of the episodes and interviews key players in the Time Lords’ fascinating story.
