CULT HERO OF THE MONTH
TIM KIRKBY’S Last Looks , ashaggy-dog Los Angeles privateeye movie, skates close to thin ice by casting Mel Gibson as a “blackout drunk” British theatrical actor arrested for killing his wife during a booze binge. Bicycling ex-cop Waldo (Charlie Hunnam), who has downsized his life but upsized his beard, investigates. Suspects and subplots abound — Waldo’s wife Lorena (Morena Baccarin) is missing presumed murdered, Beverly Hills kindergarten teacher Jayne (Lucy Fry from Night Teeth) dates a lot of rich and famous dads, and a crooked cop (Clancy Brown) wants Waldo off the case. The storyline meanders but it’s full of character – Hunnam is a series-worthy slob sleuth, and Gibson (reusing his Hamlet accent) is a comic trainwreck who turns serious for affecting moments.
