“YOU JUST FEEL like he’s your brother,” says Celine Song, of Steven Yeun (below right), one of the people mentioned in the Special Thanks section of the credits for her heart-rending Past Lives. “He’s on your side.” Yeun, best known of course for The Walking Dead, Us, and Minari, is one of the most successful Korean-American filmmakers around, and it turns out that he and Song sought each other out even before she made her achingly delicate drama about a Korean-Canadian woman reconnecting with a childhood crush. “We developed a friendship before I made the movie,” says Song. “He sometimes sends me scripts of things that he’s working on, and of course I showed him the script to Past Lives. And he read it, and we talked about it. And he backed me. It felt like he was just emotionally there.”
