Welcome to this celebratory booklet from the Guild of One-Name Studies (

This year is very special in the existence of the Guild because we celebrate our 40th anniversary. We are doing this in a variety of ways, mainly focusing on the collaborative and friendly spirit of the Guild, but more on that a little later.

We are a registered charity in England and Wales, run totally on the work of volunteers, whether those volunteers serve by contributing to the various indexes, the sharing of surname material from newspapers, other post holders – such as the webmaster, volunteers’ coordinator, our marketing team – and with members from across the globe and our Committee who are the Trustees of the Guild. From members who give a quick 30 minutes or so every now and again to those who serve as our Trustees, everyone is appreciated, and without them all our organisation could not function.

We host an annual conference each year, typically between mid-March and April – during that weekend we also hold our AGM and give thanks to the work of our members, remembering those who have passed away during the year. As a Guild we recognise members who are considered to be Master Craftsmen of the Guild, and award those who have contributed articles, judged to be excellent, to the Guild’s own publication (the Journal of One- Name Studies) or to other readily available publications.

We are an international organisation, we have members in all corners of the globe and they too contribute to the success of the Guild.

We hope that you will enjoy this booklet as we celebrate a significant achievement in the history of the Guild.
