Preserving your home archive

While we can scour the internet and archives round the country for clues about our families, the heirlooms and artefacts that we might be fortunate enough to inherit are unique and irreplaceable – so we really need to treasure them! Mike Bedford’s helpful advice will help you do just this…

While third-party documents such as parish records and online resources will usually be the bread and butter of your family research, there’s something rather special about those records that you have inherited from previous generations of your own family. Whether it’s an envelope of black and white negatives you found in your grandfather’s attic, a family Bible or an album of photographs that were taken by your great-aunt, they all share one thing in common. These precious documents are fragile and without proper care will undergo continual and irreversible damage. With this in mind, and in the hope and expectation of preserving these records for your own use and for future generations, we look at how to take care of your family archives.

It’s worth investing in as much archive quality storage equipment as you can afford. Perhaps consider buying it gradually – prioritising materials for your most precious family history items.
