The wrong way to research a family tree

Pam Fry (née Boulton) began her quest in the summer of 1975, when she entered the local museum to while away some time on a day off from work

Reader Story

Pam’s immediate family (from left): Daniel Joseph Downes (her maternal grandfather), Lucy Eileen Bayman (her paternal grandmother) Nellie Elizabeth Brown (her maternal grandmother) and Walter Clement Boulton (her paternal grandfather) at her parents’ wedding in 1950, in Whitton

I was living and working at the Sorrento Maternity Hospital, Wake Green Road, Birmingham, studying the care of premature babies. I had moved far away from my home town after a broken relationship. On my day off, bored with the monotony of the Bullring Shopping Centre, I sought out the local museum to better pass the time. Here, it was to my great surprise that I saw my father’s face staring down at me from a gold-framed, 17th-century painting hanging high up on the wall. It was the eyes, mouth and the hairline that caught my gaze, and, when I looked closer, the man’s surname, ‘Boulton’ ignited my imagination. Could this man with my surname and my father’s face be my distant relative?
