Silverstone was, how shall I put this, eventful. Like most others, I turned up without any chance to bag some practice, so the start of the meeting was all about remembering which way round the track goes and how to work a throttle. We were riding the International layout that I’d only ridden the once, and had completely forgotten not only the layout but how fast and technical the place was. And then you’ve got the bumps – but we’ll come back to them a bit later.

My unfamiliarity showed up in first qualifying when I slotted into 22nd place on the rammed No Limits Cup grid, before making big gains the next time out and lining up in eighth in the Super Series. That took the pressure off a bit, but it was a stark reminder of how quick the club had become. There are some great riders at No Limits and a proper depth of field, which really drags you on. I knew I could do better, and that was my only focus for the weekend; that and having fun. With good friends around me, the ‘fun’ part of the aim wasn’t too hard to master, but the results side was a case of steady away.
