Old school is very much in vogue right now, so we thought we’d get all dressed to impress and dive balls deep in thisretroresurgence.

The modern retroscene is booming. There, we said it. While many mock the newfound craze of dressing 21 st century metal in classic garb and therelatedoff-bikevogue, manufacturershaveacted upon boomingsales –chucking big budgets and concentrating effort intonew models. Andjust as we thought the fad wassubsiding, Kawasaki releases the awesome newZ900RS and Triumph has gone to theextentofbasing a majority of itsrange on modern retros andditching the supersportscategory.

As with other models in manufacturers’ranges, these sportyheritagebikes aren’t bespokeground-up overhauls, instead beingbasedon something that waspreviously far sportier.Mutton dressed as lamb, possibly. It’s oftenmore about style than substance, fashion overfunction, and ensuringyou don’t necessarily need to ride at eleventeen billion miles per hour –orevenjust dress as if youare.

BMW’sR nineT range has beenhugely successful with all kinds of variantsemerging from Bavaria. We’rejust surprised thisRacer derivative, which is a distinctivenod to the1970s, was one of thelasttoappear as it’s arguably the sexiest and most appealing.There’saninherent connection with BMW and retro, whereas Ya maha’seffort seems slightly moreanomalous.

Based heavilyonthe MT-09, the XSR900 is far moresubtle in its approach –bothdynamically and aesthetically –and is alsofar cheaper at justover£8,000 to the BMW’s£10,900askingprice without thearray of optional extras.Yamaha’s’Faster Sons’ brand within abrand has also proven prosperous, so this retrohead-to-head got us very moistindeed.
