Trouble ahead

Towards the end of 2016, a swath of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in England threatened to reduce their fertility funding, either lowering the number of cycles they offer to people, or cutting them completely. This is despite NICE’s 2013 recommendations that all women aged 40 or under who have not conceived in two years, should have access to a minimum of three cycles. At the same time, in March this year, the Scottish Government voted in favour of NHS Scotland providing a minimum of three cycles. The regional disparity in the provision of free or reduced cost fertility treatment has never been greater.
