I am celebrating liberty this month: the freedom to design and make as we damn well please. It all started with Art Nouveau when, tired of the rigid discipline demanded by Neoclassicism, the likes of Gallé and Majorelle started experimenting with free-form organic style, in so doing radically altering the technical approach of their large workforces. In the blink of an eyelid to change a factory’s output from ‘safe’ architectural pieces to curvaceous furniture that harked back to nature in form and embellishment was truly revolutionary - and we haven’t looked back since.
