Let’s just catch everyone up very quickly because you either know who Connor Franta is or you have no idea. If you get your news from Twitter like the rest of us, you’ll most definitely have heard of him. But if you wait until the next morning to read the news in an actual newspaper (seriously, what’s wrong with you?) you might want to sit down before you continue reading…

At just 24-years-old, Connor has amassed an audience that most TV networks would kill for. As of December 2016, his YouTube page boasted more than 5.6 million subscribers and 385 millions views. Let’s put that into gay perspective: The Real Housewives of Atlanta, the most successful incarnation of the franchise and the most watched show on the Bravo network, reached a peak audience of just over four million three seasons ago, and hasn’t stopped chasing those numbers ever since.

Connor has been putting videos on YouTube for seven years, making him something of a veteran, especially when you consider the fact that YouTube itself is only 12-years-old. His format is tried and true: mostly one-on-one direct to camera videos where, well, truthfully, not much happens – but that seems to be the point. The YouTube audience is looking for authenticity and some kind of connection, nothing too complicated or frilly, just people seemingly answering that age old question, “Whatcha thinkin’?”

About Gay Times

Connor Franta commands attention. With 5.6 million YouTubers subscribed to his channel and over 350 million views, his video diaries offer a window into the life and mind of this 24 year old entrepreneur and New York Times best-selling author. Life is not always rainbows and butterflies, though. In our April issue, we sit down with Connor to discuss his battle with depression, how coming out wasn't a cure-all, and about our individual and collective roles in the fight for LGBT+ equality.  Elsewhere in the issue, the world-exclusive interview with all the queens from Season 9 of RuPaul's Drag Race; Nicholas Afoa becomes the first Disney theatre star to pose for a gay magazine; comedian Richard Gadd on using comedy to deal with sexual assault; Dan Matthews, SVP of PETA, on throwing pies at Anna Wintour; LDN Muscle's brothers on their game-changing approach to fitness; plus, style, travel and community features.
