The problem with PrEP

…or access to it, anyway. At the time of writing, NHS England has twice refused to roll-out the drug treatment known as PrEP, even though it’s been consistently proven to be one of the most valuable weapons we’ve got in the fight against HIV/AIDS. When taken properly, PrEP has the ability to reduce new HIV infections by 92-99%.

The life-saving drug Truvada, which is used as part of the PrEP treatment, has now been removed entirely from NHS England’s commissioning process until ‘more testing is done’ – despite an NHS working group made up of clinicians and experts from across the HIV sector already demonstrating the need, efficacy and longterm cost-effectiveness of PrEP.

We’ll never know how many lives will be lost as a result of this. Thousands, probably. It’s immeasurable.

So what happens next? The National AIDS Trust has asked a high court judge to overturn NHS England’s decision, while some gay men have taken it upon themselves to order PrEP drugs online from other countries, in a dangerous trend being referred to as “PrEP in the wild”.
