He may not be a household name here in the UK, but Caleb Orozco is recognised internationally for his campaign work. Caleb lives in Belize, an Englishspeaking Central American country bordering Mexico and Guatemala. It’s popular with tourists thanks to its Caribbean weather, incredible wildlife and extensive coral reefs. Unfortunately, like many Commonwealth countries, the former British masters bequeathed numerous draconian laws, of which Section 53 was one – an anti-sodomy law which dated back to the 1880s. On 10 August 2016, after years of campaigning led by Caleb, the courts ruled that Section 53 was unconstitutional and ruled that it was no longer illegal to be homosexual in Belize. This is the story of his journey, how he grew up gay in Belize, how he battled in the courts for the landmark ruling, and what more needs to be done…
