Noy Saroeun was born in 1949 in Cambodia’s Kampong Thom Province. However, it was not until 1976, one year after the Khmer Rouge took hold of power of Cambodia, that she met her now-husband, Noy Sitha, in a Khmer Rouge labour camp in Pursat Province. While Saroeun and Sitha are not the only couple who met during this turbulent time in Cambodia’s history, their story is unique because of one crucial detail: Sitha was born as a woman in 1951. And while millions of Cambodians suffered the same fate, Sitha – an artist, an employee of the Lon Nol regime and a transgender man – had a target on his back.
