Is your money funding HATE?

How do you solve a problem like Chechnya? Uganda? Anywhere LGBT+ folk don’t share the same rights and liberties as their heterosexual counterparts? You put our money where your mouth is. Legislative change is largely driven by dollar dollar, and if you’ve got a pension, ISA or even an investment portfolio, your cash is probably propping up governments and multi-national corporations. You’ve just got to make sure it’s going to the right place…

Investment management companies look after savings, like pensions and ISAs, and decide where and how to invest them. Equality Capital is the first LGBT-focused wealth management service in the UK; in other words, unlike other companies, they screen investments to make sure they’re LGBT-friendly.

They’re an example of ‘impact investing’, where people choose a wealth manager for moral or social reasons. This model has seen huge success in America, mostly in the environmental and poverty sectors. While an environmental company might screen out oil investors, Equality Capital screens out companies that don’t offer adequate rights and protections for their LGBT+ employees. They do this by rating companies and countries based on their policies towards LGBT+ people, including their stance on marriage equality, adoption rights, military service and so on. They then score the countries accordingly and, if the counties and companies meet Equality Capital’s standards, they can be invested in.

About Gay Times

Our July cover star Tommy Dorfman is one of the rising stars to emerge from Netflix’s controversial new series 13 Reasons Why. The 25 year old revels in the controversy, noting that the show has instigated a conversation around mental health in young people that is sorely needed. Incredibly frank, and incredibly cute, we sit down with Tommy for an exclusive, no-holds-barred shoot and interview about his husband, struggles with addiction, gender fluidity and The Spice Girls (duh). Tommy’s unique tone and personality evince a positive response to hardship within the LGBT+ community, and his use of platform to promote love and equality demonstrate his rightful place in the limelight. This responsibility that our idols and icons alike have to enact change and project positive messages cannot be understated in a world increasingly burdened by a cacophony of hatred. Elsewhere in the issue: Paul O'Grady declares war on Russia; Debbie Harry on why she considers herself 'unisex'; Geri Horner on her George Michael tribute; Jonny Pierce on his sexual awakening; Miles Yekinni on why the muslim and gay communities should be standing shoulder to shoulder; plus style, travel, culture and much more!
