Great & Gay

One of the most important coming out films in a generation, Jonathan Harvey defied the social taboos surrounding sexuality at the time to tell the story of an emotionally abused teenager who embarks on a journey of discovering and sexual awakening with his neighbour. As relevant today as it was then, we celebrate two decades since the original film left us tearily proud.

When Jonathan Harvey debuted Beautiful Thing as a play back in 1993, the age of consent for gay sex was 21, Section 28 was still in place, and the representation of different sexualities in mainstream media was still sadly limited. But that all started to change when Jonathan’s small stage masterpiece was transformed for the big screen in 1996.

Set on a tough concrete council estate in Thamesmead, South East London, Beautiful Thing follows shy teenager Jamie [Glen Berry] and his infatuation with athletic neighbour Ste [Scott Neal]. Fighting the closed-minds of a mother, a drug-dealing brother and an alcoholic father, their story teaches us about the power of defiance to win a fair and equal love all of their own.
