Vicky Beeching

There’s an air of serendipity when we first meet Vicky Beeching.

Just days before we sit down with the theologian, religious commentator and former Evangelical Christian music star for coffee at a South London hotel, Trey Pearson – frontman of Christian band Everyday Sunday – bravely revealed that he’s gay, admitting that he’d been “trying his whole life to be straight”.

Trey joined a long list of popular Christian musicians that day – including Ray Boltz, the Grammy-nominated Jennifer Knapp and Vicky herself – who’ve risked their careers, livelihoods and relationships with their loved ones just by being true to themselves.

“It’s really encouraging though,” Vicky smiles. She was one of the first to offer Trey words of encouragement. “We need lots of people to stand up and hopefully it’ll create a domino effect. Coming out has a huge cost but, when I spoke to him, he was saying how the ‘love had overwhelmed the hate’. The more people who’re in the closet see that, the more they see how well it can go.”
