Asifa Lahore

UK’s first out Muslim drag queen and activist

As the UK’s first out gay Muslim drag queen, Asifa Lahore is uniquely positioned to offer a sorely needed perspective on the shocking events that took place in Orlando.

Having challenged the norms with controversial performances and appearances on documentaries, including Channel 4’s Muslim Drag Queens, Asifa argues that it’s time for the ‘everyday Muslim’ to speak out against discrimination, and for the LGBT+ community to reject Islamophobia.

What was your initial reaction to the Orlando shooting? I was absolutely horrified and completely devastated. I think in the Western world, the notion is that homophobia is a thing of the past, and there’s so much equality being acquired in law, that this shouldn’t happen. But when it did happen, I was just absolutely horrified, because it brought home the fact that actually, so much more work needs to be done, and homophobia is still very much rampant wherever you are.
