Digital Subscriptions > Healthy Food Guide > January 2019 > It’s YES, YES, YES to MID-LIFE SEX

It’s good for the mind, body and your relationship. So why do so many of us stop having sex when we hit 50? Suzi Godson looks at some common scenarios and the health reasons for putting it back on the agenda

One of the intriguing benefits of sex is that it can make you look younger. When Dr David Weeks, former head of old age psychology at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, interviewed more than 3,500 people who had been told they look particularly youthful, he found one of the most important common denominators was an active sex life.

The middle-aged respondents, who looked between four and seven years younger than their actual age, reported having sex around three times a week. That’s considerably more than the current national average. Figures from the most recent National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3) show that most people in the UK over 50 have sex only around twice a month.
