DIABETES IS CASTING A shadow over the health of the nation, with some doctors labelling it the ‘pandemic of the 21st century’. While type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition, type 2 is triggered by factors such as weight gain, a large waist measurement and high blood sugar. Uncontrolled diabetes damages blood vessels and raises your risk of heart attack, stroke and a string of other serious medical conditions, leading to complications such as blindness, nerve damage, kidney problems and amputation.

Public health experts, including Diabetes UK, are now placing a much greater emphasis on weight-loss diets for preventing type 2 diabetes, since losing 5–7% of your weight can reduce your relative risk of diabetes by 50%. Based on currently available evidence, Diabetes UK recommends five diets for shifting those extra pounds in a bid to reduce type 2 diabetes. ‘We are not saying these are the best diets for weight loss – these are just the dietary patterns that have the best evidence’, says Dr Duane Mellor, registered dietitian and lecturer in human nutrition at Coventry University, who was involved in updating the Diabetes UK guidelines. ‘The best diet will always be the one that you are able to stick to.’
