Always exercise on an empty stomach to maximise fitness gains? It might be time for a rethink, because a UK study has found that eating a bowl of porridge before cycling for an hour ‘primed’ the body to burn carbs during the ride, and more rapidly digest food afterwards. The carbs burned weren’t just those eaten at breakfast, either, but also those stored in muscles as glycogen. It echoed findings from a 2016 University of Surrey study which found that, when women consumed carbs before taking exercise classes (a mix of HIIT, Zumba and spin three times a week for four weeks), they burned more fat than those who didn’t. Carb lovers rejoice.
