You’re not imagining it and you’re not alone – bloating does affect more women than men, and it’s time our symptoms were taken seriously, says Dr Robynne Chutkan

‘Why am I so bloated?’ – I hear that question nearly every day in my clinic. If I had a dollar for every woman who came to see me with bloating, I’d be richer than Oprah! What causes it varies tremendously, but one factor is beyond doubt; women do suffer more from bloating than men. While we can’t change our biology, we can do a lot to maintain good digestive health.

There are three main reasons why women are affected more with bloating. First, women have a longer colon than men – around 10cm longer. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but it causes extra twists and turns in the gut that leads to crowding, constipation and bloating. Our colons are longer so we can absorb more fluid from food during pregnancy, to keep levels of amniotic fluid topped up.
