Veganism is one of the biggest trends in food right now. But is it right for you? And, how complicated is it really?

Green is the new black. Ocado shoppers are buying 15 times as many plant-based products as they were a year ago, we are more likely to google ‘vegan’ than ‘vegetarian’, ‘paleo’ or ‘sugar free’, and everyone from J Lo to Brit boxer David Haye is ditching dairy. In fact, veganism is now growing faster than vegetarianism with Veganuary 2018 set to be the vegan movement’s biggest ever recruitment drive.

The driving force behind the trend? Millennials – 42 per cent of the UK’s vegans are aged 15-34. Inevitably, Beyoncé’s shouldering the blame. In

December 2013, she partnered with exercise physiologist Marco Borges to promote The 22-Day Revolution, crediting her experimentation with the vegan diet plan with tightening and firming her ‘flawless’ body. It’s a lazy explanation, and one which doesn’t give us enough credit, argues TheGreen V’s Rachida Brocklehurst. ‘I don’t think celebrities have had much of an impact,’ she argues.
