WHAT HAPPENS WHEN… I ORGASM?

That explosive climax feels incredible, but what exactly causes it, and are there tricks to make it more of a regular occurrence?

A recent survey found that just a third of women climax regularly, compared to 91 per cent of men, while other research has shown that almost three per cent of British women have never had an orgasm. This just shows how elusive the female orgasm can be, but by understanding better how it happens, perhaps we could all enjoy more satisfying sex.

Why is foreplay important?

Research estimates that 70-80 per cent of women don’t orgasm through penetrative sex alone. ‘For most, orgasm starts with clitoral stimulation,’ says Dr Ian Kerner, sex psychotherapist and author of She Come irst: The Thinking Man’s Guide To Pleasuring A Woman (Harper Collins, £14.99). ‘The clitoris is home to a collection of extra-sensitive nerve endings, hence if it gets sufficient love and attention, climax is easier to achieve.’
