Adaptogens are getting a lot of attention for their health benefits, from stress relief to immunity enhancement. Is it justified?

What are they?

The clue is in the name: an adaptogen is a substance that helps your body to adapt, protecting it from the effects of stress. It was coined by Russian toxicologist Nikolai Lazarev in 1957, and applies to certain herbs and mushrooms. An adaptogen has to adhere to the four ‘Ns’ – Nourishing, Normalising, Non-specific (it acts on multiple parts of the body), and Non-toxic. Popular in Asia, where they’ve been used for centuries, essentially adaptogens are biological response modifiers (BRMs), so thought to help your body cope with whatever life throws at you.
