PAIN MANAGEMENT

Pain relief is never out of the news, with a bevy of benefits making headlines. But what should you take? And what are the natural alternatives?

PROFESSOR ROGER KNAGGS is the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s spokesperson on pain-relief medicine, and honorary secretary of the British Pain Society, britishpainsociety.org

While aspirin may be outdated for easing aches and pains, a low dose appears to be the go-to for cutting heart attacks and stroke.

And research suggests that if you take it for at least six years, it could reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by 19 per cent and gastrointestinal cancer by 15 per cent. It may also have plaque-reducing properties to protect the brain.

However, a recent study suggested the benefits of aspirin only work during middle age, and taking it regularly could also increase the risk of side-effects like bleeding in later life. Many of the fringe benefits of painkillers are still being researched, and doctors recommend that healthy people should only take them to counter pain. This is in part because two million Brits are addicted to overthe- counter painkillers such as codeine, a highly addictive opiate, while others are thought to take common painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen because they don’t know what else to do.
