HEALTH NEWS
We may be sprinkling turmeric on everything and chowing down on kale, but when it comes to our sexual health we’re not nearly so careful. And, as a nation, we’re in a sorry state. Half of young people don’t use condoms with a new partner, and one in 10 never have. It’s not just young’uns taking risks; there’s been a surge in STIs among over-45s – particularly women over 65 who have seen a 25 per cent increase in diagnoses in five years. TV isn’t helping – a study found that only 0.02 per cent of sex scenes feature contraception, and out of 2600 scenes analysed, only one mentioned STIs. Cases of syphilis are at their highest in 70 years, and antibiotic resistance is making gonorrhoea harder to treat, so if you’ve never been tested, you need to. Experts recommend an annual check, and if you’ve had unprotected sex. You can get screened for everything, including HIV, at your local sexual health clinic, and most of them text your results to save time and blushes.
