From talking about our struggles with mental health, to discussing the realities of childbirth, never have we been more open about our wellbeing – both physical and mental. A picture of a new mum wearing a nappy went viral in 2016, while Insta-sensation yogi Steph Gongora, who has upwards of 370,000 followers, posted a picture of herself doing yoga in white leggings while clearly on her period this year. It’s a new, unabashed openness that women are embracing, and it’s having an impact. ‘With so many platforms now available for us to share our experiences, we’re becoming a global community of supportive sisters,’ says psychologist Emma Kenny. ‘It signals the start of the end of stigmas long associated with “female problems”, from childbirth to gynaecological issues, mental health to miscarriage. That’s a powerful thing, as only by shining a light on our health experiences can we encourage others to understand and find better ways to manage them.’
