DO THE Hustle

Full-time farming might just be a few side steps away.

When I speak at agricultural conferences, one of the most common things I hear from the audience is a desire to escape their current jobs, have more time to farm or homestead, or to make more of a living from their land. So how does one get from the “stuck in the city, working for someone else” life to the captain of their own ship? For me and my family, it started with what we call “side hustles.”

FIRST STEPS

My family’s foray into farming came about for a simple reason: I couldn’t find a sufficient supply of certain products for the Louisville Whole Life buying club I started in 2006, such as pastured eggs from layers fed non-gmo or organic feed. So, after we moved out to the country and got settled, we immediately began to pursue producing key products that I knew the club needed, such as pastured eggs.

The author’s son is hard at work sifting worm castings and filling orders. Side hustles can teach kids important skills and provide them with fairly earned cash.
