Nights are drawing in and there’s a real nip in the air, so it really has to be November. The main growing season is now over and restless gardeners are looking for a challenge that doesn’t involve burning, composting or covering the plot in unsightly material for the limbo that is winter. Enter the November issue of Home Farmer; complete with articles on what you can still sow and grow at this time of year, getting the plot ready for next year, preparing leaf-mould, and a 20 point action plan from John Harrison – allotment blogger of the year in 2015 – it’s guaranteed to keep the restless gardener busy during downtime, or to give some fresh inspiration elsewhere around the garden, plot, allotment or holding. We also have articles on dealing with the annual chicken moult and other reasons for feather loss, action to take if mice settle in for winter, keeping goats, keeping bees in an urban setting, preserving and preparing the November harvest, traditional cakes and bakes recipes from the Home Farmer archive, and a feature on Russian cuisine – ideal recipes for the British winter, and all made using seasonal ingredients readily available at this time of year. Supplement that with our monthly foraging feature, a speedy home-made wine recipe that will be ready to drink by Christmas, and a template for a winter bird diary to help get to know all the feathered visitors to your garden, and it’s the perfect antidote to a British winter.
