YOUR QUICK AND EASY GUIDE TO... Small space gardening

Step into the sunshine and bring your outdoor space to life – however teeny tiny it may be!

Those long-awaited rays of summer sun are upon us and, as uplifting as they are, they also have the nasty habit of shedding light on just how ramshackle our outside spaces have become... whoops. But don’t panic – we’re here to help inspire your makeover plans. From easy growing guides (how do you correctly plant-up containers, anyway?) to instant refreshers for forlorn flower borders and starting your own window box veg plot, we’ve got the best advice to get your small garden, balcony or windowsill bursting with colour in no time at all.

Hanging baskets

Suspending plants from the air is a tried-and-tested trick for bringing floral fabulousness into a tiny outside space, but that doesn’t mean that you should rely on ordinary displays. Think outside the box and use old colanders (you could even paint them) as planters and grow strawberries or tumbling cherry tomatoes instead of bedding plants.

Got milk?

Create a milk carton planter with recycling enthusiast Chanel De Kock’seasy DIY. Cut off the spout of the carton, leaving the handle intact. Add drainage holes to the bottom of your carton. Tie it to your post through the handle. Add a few inches of moist soil and press down lightly before placing the plant in the centre.

About Homestyle

The long awaited arrival of the summer sun means this month we’re focusing on extending our living space outdoors. If you don’t have acres to play with, fear not, as we’ve mustered plenty of simple and cost-effective ways for gardening in a small space on page 72. If the idea of stepping into the fresh air appeals, while making a quid or two at the same time, Abbi gives us the low down on trading your wares in her boot sale boot camp. For those after some real home inspo on a shoestring, you’re in luck! Erin Hayhow showcases her own art for a truly creative space (p.14), Cathy Locke proves once and for all that kitsch really is cool (p.50), Laura Goble makes a heavenly find by fixing up a church pew (p.38), and Sooz Gordon demonstrates that dark walls are gorgeous, not gloomy (p.26) – navy is the new magnolia, FYI. Feel like your home is beyond salvation? Close down the Rightmove app until you’ve read our six-page special on low cost revamps and straightforward renovations over on page 60. You may just learn to fall back in love with your home. After all that, you’ll probably be feeling a little peckish, which is why we have a fiesta of Mediterranean recipes for you (p.88), plus mid-week dinners for rumbling tummies who just can’t wait (p86). Enjoy, HomeStylers!
