The handmade touches fuel my creativity
Lizzie Meeks had a miniscule budget to transform her ideal home office – but that didn’t stop her from creating an inspiring and restful space
A bit about me
Hi, I’m Lizzie Meeks and I live with my husband, Oliver, in a three-bed Victorian house in South London.

My problem home office
We used this spare room as a dumping ground for unwanted stuff while we were decorating the rest of the house, and we hadn’t touched it since moving in three years ago. There was no useable storage except a couple of built-in cupboards that I couldn’t get to, and I found it hard to use it as a home office with all the chaos around me.
How I made it work
After clearing the room, we painted the walls in pale grey tones, picking a darker shade for the woodwork to highlight the original features and give the space character. A new carpet was laid, and once I’d bought a trestle-legged desk and smart filing cabinets, my budget was nearly gone. I saved money by finishing the room with interesting craft ideas.
