Our expert
DID YOU KNOW?
The ‘expert’ “If he jumps in big then you need to push for three strides. If he doesn’t, then you need to be waiting for four. It’s all about the take-off at the first part as to how you ride for the second. It’s a wide second part so you don’t want to be asking for take-off too early...” – does a monologue like this sound familiar? If so, you probably know an ‘expert’. They fill your head with heaps of information and try to change your ideas – well-meaning or not, a course walk isn’t the time for fresh ideas and big shake-ups. Plus, this is clearly a lot of information for just one combination. Will it help you be clear on your plan in the moment?
Talk to yourself
In eventing, you’re likely to be able to walk the showjumping and cross-country courses the day before, giving you more time to consider your route.
The buzz-kill A course walk’s no place for negative thoughts, whether they’re of your own making or put into your head by others. Someone like this may say: “You’ll never get over that”, “You need to get this right or you’ll crash and burn” or “If you don’t ride positively into this, then you’ll have no chance”. This isn’t a useful mindset to have just before you’re due to start.
