Stand still
Working to overcome mounting problems, rather than just ignoring them, will make all aspects of riding safer for both you and your horse. Not only will it take the stress out of mounting, but training your horse to stand still when you ask him will also translate to other aspects of life, such as standing for the farrier or outside the horsebox or trailer at a show.

Jack stood good as gold to be groomed and tacked up ready for a hack, but first Liz had to overcome the usual problem – getting on. Does your horse fidget in front of the mounting block while you’re tying to get on, too? Perhaps he walks off as soon as he senses your foot enter the stirrup? It’s easy to focus on the dangers involved with riding itself when, in fact, accidents can still happen at the mounting stage. This is why ensuring your horse learns to remain stationary and well-mannered while you’re in such a compromised position is imperative for the safety of all involved.
