CommonSpace has a Decision to Make

If we want to know who has power in society, to paraphrase a quote wrongly attributed to Voltaire, we must simply ask ourselves who it is we are not allowed to criticise. Every society – be it a state, a political or social movement, or a small community – has some form of power structure, and the independence movement is no exception. While the movement, as something to be distinguished from the pro-independence political parties and their leaderships, has no leader or leaders as such, it does – in its various factions – look to certain organisations and individuals for leadership.

In the absence of a balanced representation of proindependence opinion at the level of the national, mainstream media, the leaders of this movement have emerged from what has come to be known as the “alternative media.” In effect this is the media, both in print and online, that is being produced and published by people and organisations within the movement for the consumption of independence supporters. The growth and vitality of this alternative media in Scotland is evidence that the movement is a living social organism, and daily disproves the unionist assertion that support for independence “has peaked.”
