1. What’s the basic problem?

Nuclear weapons are inhumane instruments of mass destruction that can each kill hundreds of thousands of people instantaneously, poison land and cause people many miles away indescribable suffering through irradiation, which may persist through several generations. Climate scientists now predict that any so-called limited nuclear war would disrupt the global climate leading to widespread crop failure and famine. The development of nuclear weapons arose as the ultimate step in efforts to exercise dominance through the use of force, with decisions made secretly and undemocratically and with an arrogant underestimation of human reliance on the planet or our potential effect on its ability to sustain us.
